As the college football landscape gears up for another exciting season, the American Athletic Conference (AAC) stands poised for gridiron action that promises to intrigue fans across the 901.

Over recent months, teams have solidified their rosters. Now, the spring edition of the AAC Football Power Rankings offers a comprehensive look at the conference’s top contenders and analyzes their prospects for the upcoming campaign.

Tier 1: Contenders

Memphis Tigers: Leading the pack is the Seth Henigan-led Memphis Tigers squad. The Tigers are fresh off a solid 10-3 season that ended in a Liberty Bowl victory. With the return of star quarterback Seth Henigan, a talented receiving corps featuring Roc Taylor and Dameer Blankumsee, and the addition of highly touted running back Mario Anderson, Memphis is ready to maintain its dominance in the AAC.

South Florida Bulls: Under the guidance of second-year head coach Alex Golesh, the South Florida Bulls are undoubtedly on an upward trajectory. The Bulls exceeded expectations with a solid 7-6 performance last season. Quarterback Byrum Brown dazzled as a redshirt freshman. He showcased his dual-threat abilities with over 4,000 yards of offense and 37 total touchdowns. With a markedly improved roster and Brown’s continued development, the Bulls are prepared to make waves in the conference.

Tulane Green Wave: Despite losing their head coach and key offensive contributors, the Tulane Green Wave remain a force to be reckoned with. The influx of new talent injects optimism into the program. It signals a potential resurgence as they aim to continue to compete at the highest level in the AAC.

Tier 2: In the Discussion

North Texas Mean Green: While hit hard by the transfer portal, the North Texas Mean Green have made significant acquisitions. These include former TCU quarterback Chandler Morris and standout running backs Tre Bradford and Zach Evans. With these additions, along with some returning talent, North Texas aims to make strides in the conference standings.

UTSA Roadrunners: Quarterback uncertainties loom for the UTSA Roadrunners following the departure of Frank Harris. However, head coach Jeff Traylor has instilled a culture of competitiveness that bodes well for the team’s prospects. Despite challenges, UTSA is ready to remain a competitive force in the AAC.

Army Black Knights: Joining the AAC ranks, Army closed out last season on a run. They secured four consecutive victories, including notable wins over ranked opponents. The Black Knights certainly have momentum on their side and the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy in hand. Now, they enter the conference with aspirations of making an immediate impact.

Tier 3: Outside Chance

Rice Owls: With former Temple quarterback E.J. Warner at the helm, the Rice Owls aim to build upon their solid performance from last season and stake their claim in the AAC standings.

UAB Blazers: Despite a challenging 4-8 campaign last year, the UAB Blazers boast promising talent. Quarterback Jacob Zeno is the headliner for the Blazers. He’ll look to help the Blazers turn the tide and climb the ranks in the AAC.

Tier 4: Everyone Else

Navy Midshipmen

East Carolina Pirates

FAU Owls

Charlotte 49ers

Tulsa Golden Hurricane

Temple Owls

As the spring unfolds and teams continue to refine their strategies and rosters, the AAC landscape is set to be a wide open race. While I definitely see Memphis as the front runner, it could still be anyone’s conference.
