Caleb Mills: A Journey of Ups and Downs That Leads to Memphis

Published

on

In a remarkable journey that has taken him from the Houston Cougars to the Florida State Seminoles and now to the Memphis Tigers, Caleb Mills has experienced the highs and lows of college basketball.

From being a standout freshman at Houston to seeking new opportunities at Florida State, his decision to join the Tigers signifies yet another chapter in his basketball career. Let’s take a deeper look into Mills’ path to ending up at Memphis and see what fans can expect from him.

Time with the Coogs

During his time at Houston, Mills emerged as a scoring force and played a vital role in the team’s success. As a freshman, he made an immediate impact, averaging 13.2 points per game and earning the AAC Sixth Man of the Year award for the 2019-2020 season. In his sophomore year, Mills earned AAC preseason Player of the Year honors, but injuries would have him sidelined for most of the season.

Florida State

Over the past two seasons, Mills has been a part of some not-so-good Florida State squads. However, during this time, Mills has remained very consistent averaging 12.7 and 13 points per game in his two years. While he’s made no major improvements in his game since his time at Houston, he has seen a boost in his shooting percentages and assists numbers.

What can Memphis fans expect?

Mills excels in scoring, showcasing a wide range of techniques and a natural ability to put the ball in the basket. His ball-handling skills are exceptional, allowing him to navigate through defenses and create scoring opportunities.

Mills plays the game at a very fast pace, which could fit well into Penny Hardaway’s system. He could improve his game by playing better on-ball defense and taking better quality shots. We saw what Hardaway did with Kendric Davis last year on the defensive end, so it will be interesting to see if he replicates that with Mills.
