Junior quarterback Seth Henigan began his Tigers career with a tremendous freshman campaign.

Fast forward three years, and while Henigan remains a solid quarterback, there are some concerns about his progression. In this article, we’ll explore the factors that may be hindering his development and why he still has time to prove himself.

Career to Date

Henigan’s individual statistics portray a more positive aspect of his career compared to the team’s win-loss records. His freshman and sophomore years showed similar numbers, creating anticipation for growth in the 2023 season.

So far, Henigan has shown more of the same. While he has improved his completion percentage and displayed a newfound confidence in running the ball, he is also on pace to have a career-high in interceptions in a season.

Memphis is currently 3-1, 1-0 in conference play. Winning games and reducing interceptions could be all it takes for us to witness a new and improved Henigan.

Offensive Coordinator

Although nobody can fully control Henigan’s performance, one possible factor contributing to his stagnation is offensive coordinator Tim Cramsey. Cramsey, who arrived from Marshall last season, has faced criticism for his play-calling.

Henigan’s apparent stagnation could certainly be linked to the system in place, which seems to hinder his growth. Cramsey’s conservative style of play-calling has yet to enable Henigan to seize full control of a game.

Alternatively, this caution might result from limited trust in the junior quarterback by the coaching staff.

Overall

In my view, Henigan is a serviceable quarterback, but lacks the ability to take over and win games for Memphis.

Overall, I wouldn’t say he has regressed, but he hasn’t shown significant progression either. This issue may not solely be on him, as Cramsey’s play calling has been unimpressive. The silver lining is that there are plenty of games left to challenge this narrative.

Amidst concerns like conference realignment, one fact remains: winning can solve many problems.
