Larry Brown, an 82-year-old Hall of Fame coach, is expected to become an assistant at Washington. Previously, he served as an assistant at Memphis for the 2021-22 season. Although he had planned to continue in that role, Brown stepped down due to health concerns.
Brown’s Time at Memphis
Fans were delighted to see Brown finally joining Penny Hardaway’s staff, regardless of his age. Speculation about this possibility had started on the day Hardaway was appointed as the head coach.
The staff for the 2021-22 season, which included not only Brown but also NBA legend Rasheed Wallace, generated considerable excitement among fans.
Also on the staff was a talented recruiter, Cody Toppert, who had worked in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns. The staff helped pull in the No. 1 recruiting class in the country that featured Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren.
During his one full-time season at Memphis, the Tigers struggled at the beginning of the year. Memphis figured it out by February, however, and eventually swept Houston in the regular season to earn an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament.
Brown had seemed to build a close relationship with many players on the team. The team seemed to appreciate having his great basketball mind around and it seemed like Brown enjoyed being on the sidelines for Hardaway.
New Gig at Washington
Brown has now taken a job at Washington, showcasing his enduring love for basketball. Despite his brief time at Memphis, it’s great to see him back in the coaching game.
As a fan, it was an honor to witness Brown on the sidelines at Memphis after multiple attempts, and I’m sure many other fans would agree.
