Memphis baseball has a new leader in town: Matt Riser from Southeastern Louisiana.
Riser has spent the last 10 seasons coaching the Lions to a 320-224 record. In those 10 seasons, Riser helped the Lions make 4 NCAA tournament appearances.
Prior to coaching at Southeastern Louisiana, Riser served as an assistant at Tulane.
His hiring at Memphis comes just over two weeks after Kerrick Jackson decided to leave for Missouri after only one season with the Tigers.
Although Riser was recently fired by Southeastern Louisiana, his dismissal has garnered criticism from fans. Despite the team’s difficult season in 2023, it is important to remember that just two years ago, Riser led the school to hosting a Regional tournament.
What can Memphis fans expect?
Riser garners high respect in college baseball due to his excellent rapport with players and staff.
His qualities make him capable of establishing a successful program in Memphis. It will be interesting to observe how his coaching prowess translates to the American conference, considering his triumph in the Southland conference.
Keys to Success
To succeed, Riser must recruit and keep local talent. Memphis has invested in the program by upgrading facilities like FedExPark. Attracting skilled players who align with the team culture will determine Riser’s tenure.
Given his track record and the program’s potential, Riser should help Memphis be a consistent threat in the American for the foreseeable future.
