Meet Seth Bell: The Man Behind the David Jones Profile Picture Trend

Those of you active on X may have noticed several accounts with the same profile pic – that picture being none other than Memphis star David Jones. No, they did not get hacked nor was it a glitch. Instead, a young, longtime supporter of the Memphis Men’s Basketball program found himself at the root of a trend that dominated Memphis sports talk on X. Meet Seth Bell – the man behind the David Jones profile picture trend.

The Story Behind the Profile Picture

After Memphis’ dominant 106-87 win over UAB on Sunday, Bell watched the postgame presser on Bluff City Media’s YouTube page. In that presser, Memphis G/F David Jones, F Nae’Qwan Tomlin, and G Jahvon Quinerly sat and answered questions, while simultaneously joking and laughing with each other after the dominant win on Senior Day.

Before being asked where this season ranked among his other seasons, Jones gave a devious look to the reporter. Bell found this look hilarious, which he decided to screenshot and post on X. He made this his profile pic and urged Will – one of the biggest Memphis fans on social media – to join him. From there, the “tribal chief of Memphis Tigers’ Twitter” – Brandon Bumgarner – and others posted their new profile pictures and urged others to join in on the latest trend. There are close to over 100 accounts now with the David Jones picture as their profile picture, including David Jones himself seizing the moment and joining in on the trend.

Growing Up a Tiger Fan

Seth Bell – who now lives in Dallas, TX – spent the majority of his childhood living in and around Memphis. His family weren’t necessarily the biggest Tigers fans; however, after receiving free terrace-level tickets to a Memphis game, Bell became captivated. From that moment on, the Tigers never left Bell’s heart and became a huge part of his personality. During our conversation, he recalled watching highlights of the 2008 National Runner-Ups on YouTube in the back of his classes in High School to pass the time.

“I loved the grit and grind of that team. I feel like they truly represented the core of Memphians. As a Memphian, I felt deeply connected to that team and still do to this day,” Bell said.

Bell’s love for the Tigers is not solely stored in the Memphis Men’s Basketball Team. In fact, his favorite Tigers memory was attending the College Gameday festivities during the 2019 Memphis Football season, where Memphis won and ultimately played in a New Year’s Six Bowl. Now, Bell finds himself rooting for all Memphis sports teams, including the Memphis Hustle – the NBA G-League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies.

In his free time, Bell likes to volunteer at the local homeless shelter and golf with his friends. Despite living in Texas, Bell makes it a priority to attend a few home games each season. He always makes sure to bring his rack of ribs, which he acquired from a cheerleader at the 2019 ESPN College Gameday in Memphis.

“A cheerleader dropped the ribs, and I immediately picked them up. They wanted the smoke, but I refused to give them back,” says Bell.

Message to David Jones

Bell has one, simple message to Memphis G/F David Jones, who remains undecided if he will take advantage of the extra year of eligibility:

“Come back, bro. Memphis needs you, and the City loves you.”
