Memphis Baseball Drops Game Two at #14 ECU

Published

on

On Saturday, Memphis Baseball (26-24, 8-12 American) dropped the second game of the three-game series to #14 East Carolina (37-14, 14-6 American) by a score of 10-3. The two teams play again on Sunday on ESPN+ at 12 PM Central Time.

Recap

Memphis Baseball P Dalton Fowler (5-5, 3.94 ERA) was on the bump Saturday to start the game against #14 ECU. He was marvelous through the first six innings, allowing only one run to an ECU offense that has been lethal all season. Memphis HC Kerrick Jackson decided to keep Fowler in the game to face the ECU bats for the third time. Chaos ensued. The East Carolina bats woke up in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring 4 runs against Fowler. East Carolina scored five more runs in the bottom of the eighth to put the game out of reach. ECU beat Memphis by a score of 10-3.

Lack of Offense

The lack of offense from Memphis Baseball recently is a little concerning. In the first half of the game against East Carolina starting P Trey Yesavage (6-1, 3.00 ERA), who is the #1 AAC Prospect in the 2024 MLB Draft and the #36 overall prospect in the 2024 MLB Draft, the Memphis bats failed to get anything going on offense. Yesavage threw only 60 total pitches in 3.1 innings, allowing only 1 hit and 1 walk.

Memphis left six runners on base and recorded eight hits throughout the game. Yet, they only scored three runs in the game. Those three runs were meaningless too, since they came in the top of the eighth and ninth innings when Memphis found themselves in a huge hole already. On Friday, Memphis’ offense failed to show up as well, scoring 3 of their 4 runs in the top of the eighth when they were already down 10-1.

Positive Takeaways

Memphis Baseball P Dalton Fowler pitched an absolute gem through the first six innings of the game, surrendering only one run to a potent ECU offense. Memphis found themselves only down 1-0 until they collapsed in the bottom of the seventh inning. Additionally, some of the offensive woes can be attributed largely to ECU P Trey Yesavage. He is a highly touted MLB prospect, ranking #36 overall for the 2024 MLB Draft.

Memphis will face off against #14 East Carolina in the final game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12 PM Central Time on ESPN+.
