Memphis Basketball Non-Conference Preview

Published

on

As the Memphis roster begins to finally take shape, it’s natural to start looking ahead to the upcoming 2023 season.

Once again, the Tigers are set to face a highly competitive non-conference slate of games this year. The non-conference schedule for this year includes more of the same with SEC teams, two ACC opponents and an overseas trip to the Bahamas.

Home Games

November 6: Jackson State
November 17: Alabama State
December 16: Clemson

After almost a month of the road, Memphis will return home for a great game against Clemson. Clemson had a solid season last year, finishing with a 23-11 record and earning a spot in the NIT tournament.

December 19: Virginia

Memphis will host two ACC opponents back to back in the 2023 campaign. This will be only the second time the Tigers have ever played the Cavaliers. Only other time being in the 2013 NCAA Tournament where Virginia convincedly won.

December 23: Vanderbilt

After last season going to Vanderbilt for the season opener, Memphis will once again play the Commodores. Although the opponent is not Tennessee, it is still exciting to see the Tigers go up against an in-state “rival.”

December 30: Austin Peay

Away Games

November 10: Missouri

In the second game of the season, Memphis faces their first test as they go on the road to take on Missouri. Notably, Coach Penny Hardaway will be suspended for this matchup. Rick Stansbury will fill in for Hardaway in a challenging environment.

December 2: Ole Miss

Memphis will see a completely different Ole Miss team this year as they now have Chris Beard at helm. Another notable for this matchup is Moussa Cisse, who recently transferred to the Rebels this off season.

December 5: VCU

Memphis will hit the road to face VCU this year after hosting them at the FedexForum last season. VCU is consistently a competitive team in the A10 conference, making this matchup an intriguing one.

December 10: Texas A&M

Memphis will travel down to College Station to face their fourth and final SEC opponent of the season. The Aggies have a tremendous coach in Buzz Williams and can make for a potential Quad 1 win for the Tigers.

Battle 4 Atlantis (Nov. 23-25)

Memphis will participate in this year’s Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. The Tigers are amongst many blue blood and highly respected programs. The matchups and bracket have not been set out yet, regardless Memphis will have a huge opportunity to prove themselves early in the season.
