Memphis returned to the FedExForum for another showdown, this time against their second consecutive ACC opponent, Virginia.
This game signifies the first ranked matchup at home since March 8, 2014, when #20 Memphis hosted #14 SMU. In the latest AP Poll, Memphis and Virginia held the #22 and #23 spots, respectively.
First Half
Memphis kicked off the game impressively, establishing a 12-point lead in the opening four minutes — their best start of the season. David Jones displayed All-American caliber play, making a substantial impact on the Tigers’ early success. By halftime Jones led all scorers with 16 points, shooting an impressive 5/7 from the field. Remarkably, he was the sole Tiger in double-figure scoring during the first half.
Despite Memphis establishing an early lead, Virginia adeptly found ways to remain in the game by capitalizing on the Tigers’ multiple scoring droughts. Particularly when Jones was on the bench, Virginia orchestrated runs to keep the score within reach. As the teams headed into the locker room, Memphis maintained a 38-32 advantage.
Second Half
Memphis stepped on the gas in the second half, gradually extending their lead. Notably, the Tigers forced nine turnovers in the second half and held Virginia to under 30% shooting, including 1/8 from three. The game started to break open for Memphis around the under-10-minute mark, courtesy of a 14-2 run.
Credit is due to Penny Hardaway and his staff for pivotal halftime adjustments. Memphis’ uncommon size, athleticism, and length posed a challenge for Virginia in the second half.
While Jones shined, Malcolm Dandridge and Caleb Mills consistently contributed, fulfilling their roles on both ends of the floor.
Maintaining control, Memphis secured a decisive 77-54 victory, advancing to a 9-2 record. This triumph marks Memphis’ third consecutive win against a top-25 team.
