ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) has ranked the Tigers 66th in their recent release of 2024 preseason ratings. With a projected record of 7-5.
Yes.
Memphis enters the upcoming season with a roster with talent and experience. Anchoring their offense is quarterback Seth Henigan, whose proven to be a steady hand for Memphis throughout his career. Henigan could be in for a breakout season. Alongside him is dynamic wide receiver Roc Taylor, whose ability to create game-changing plays adds another dimension to Memphis’ offensive arsenal. With such a formidable duo leading the charge, it’s clear that the Tigers possess the firepower to dismantle opposing defenses. With a strong returning cast and an improved defense expect the Tigers to finish much higher than 66th.
Where Memphis’ opponents rank
Here is where some of Memphis’s key opponents fair in the rankings:
Florida State (11)
UTSA (56)
Tulane (69)
Troy (75)
UAB (98)
Safe to say Memphis will have its work cutout for them Week 3 in Tallahassee. However outside of that there shouldn’t be another game on the schedule that they will be overmatched talent wise. They have some tough road games in conference (Tulane, UTSA, and USF) but overall it is a pretty manageable schedule for Silverfield and the Tigers.
Does the FPI ranking really matter?
The ESPN FPI ranking of 66 for Memphis may grab some headlines, but in the grand scheme of things, it holds little significance. Football is a game played on the field, not on paper or algorithms. History is replete with examples of teams defying preseason rankings to emerge as champions. Moreover, Memphis boasts a roster brimming with talent, experience, and hunger for success. With players like Seth Henigan and Roc Taylor leading the charge, backed by a solid coaching staff, the Tigers have all the ingredients for a successful season.
