With the 2023-24 season coming to an abrupt end, the offseason has arrived sooner than anticipated. Once again, it’s “Portal SZN” for Penny Hardaway and the Memphis Tigers as they embark on the task of building a new team for the upcoming season.
Memphis is sure to attract talent, but to elevate their on-court performance, they should consider three key strategies.
1.) Build the Roster Early
Last offseason, Memphis encountered difficulties with late signings and arrivals, leading to challenges in team cohesion and chemistry. To address these culture issues effectively, Hardaway must prioritize early recruitment efforts to build a roster that aligns with his vision.
I’m not suggesting that Memphis can’t add a few late recruits, but the core of the roster should be established early on.
Ultimately, waiting too long to make decisions can limit their ability to be selective and secure the right players. Anticipate a significant uptick in the staff’s recruiting activities following the conclusion of the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
2.) Stars and Role Players
To construct a successful roster, it’s crucial to recruit star talent and build around them strategically. Identifying two to three key players and then complementing them with players willing to embrace their specific roles.
Not every player needs to aspire to be the star; having role players who excel defensively can be just as critical. The coaching staff and potential signees must align in their understanding of the team’s goals.
Acquiring talent may not be a challenge for Memphis, but putting the pieces together will remain a primary concern.
3.) Retain Some Players
While the transfer portal offers a plethora of talent, retaining players can foster a stronger sense of unity within the program.
David Jones does indeed have another year of eligibility, but he seems to be leaning towards going pro. Regardless, there are still pieces that can help lay a foundation such as the freshmen (Hardaway and Cherenfant) and Jayhlon Young.
As of the current date, Nicholas Jourdain is the lone player that has announced he will return. Jonathan Pierre has already entered the transfer portal with intention to continue competing at the mid-major level.
