On Tuesday night, Memphis kicked off the first round of the American Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament against the Wichita State Shockers. Behind a strong outing from P Luke Ellis and P David Warren, the Tigers’ offense exploded beating the Shockers by a score of 10-6. Their win set them up with a game against Tulane in round two of the AAC Baseball Tournament on Thursday.
Preview of Round Two
Shortly before the Tigers’ game on Tuesday, Tulane took down the number two-seeded Houston Cougars by a score of 10-8. It marked one of several upsets on Tuesday, with the number one-seeded East Carolina Pirates falling as well. Tulane’s offensive exploded for 10 runs against Houston, but I don’t expect that to continue against the Tigers.
Earlier in the season, Memphis lost two out of three games against Tulane in Louisiana. The final game in the series ended in a Tigers’ loss after 11 innings. The Tigers’ offense really struggled to get going in that series.
At the end of the season, Memphis played a three-game series against Tulane for Senior Weekend last weekend. Memphis won two out of the three games. The Tigers’ ace and AAC pitcher of the year Dalton Fowler struggled against Tulane, which resulted in the loss. However, Fowler has not really struggled much this year, so if he pitches against the Green Wave tomorrow, I don’t expect him to struggle again.
What’s Next for the Tigers?
If Memphis beats Tulane on Thursday, they will advance to the semifinal game on Saturday where they will play the winner of one of the games on Friday. If the Tigers’ lose to Tulane, they will play on Friday against the winner of the Houston and Wichita State game. That game was supposed to be played on Wednesday night, but a weather delay prevented that game from being played. Instead, that game will be played on Thursday morning.
