RECAP: Memphis Loses Early in AAC Tournament

Published

on

The American Athletic Conference Tournament kicked off today for Memphis against Wichita State. The Tigers had positioned themselves in a scenario where they must win the entire conference tournament to secure a spot in March Madness.

Memphis entering today already faced the Shockers twice this season winning both matchups. The third matchup between the two squads began as a back and forth scrappy and sloppy battle with the Shockers breaking away in the second.

Over the last 10 minutes, Memphis would lock in defensively and even get themselves a lead.  However, the Tigers would not be able to ‘survive and advance’ and see their slim chances of making the NCAA Tournament vanish.

Regardless of the daunting task of winning 4 games in 4 days in the back of their heads, Memphis needed to take a one game at a time approach.  Looking too much ahead could be perhaps what ultimately burned them.

Key Game Elements

The Tigers’ limited frontcourt depth proved to be detrimental in multiple aspects. Subsequently, Wichita State capitalized dominating the paint to score 51% of their points and winning the rebounding battle. Physically, the Shockers exerted control over the matchup, outworking Memphis.

Jahvon Quinerly, known for stepping up in conference tournaments, simply did not come to play today. The fifth year senior would end the game with 8 points, on 3/15 shooting and 1/6 from behind the arch.

Given what was at stake today, Memphis didn’t play as if the season was on the line. Overall, a very disappointing effort from a group who’s effort has been questioned numerous times throughout the season.

Thoughts from Penny

“I’m working really hard. I work 2o hours a day, there’s no coach that can outwork me.”

With the NCAA Tournament completely out of the picture, Memphis would have found themselves in the NIT. Hardaway in the press conference would say that Memphis would not accept a NIT invite, but we will see what the administration at the UofM ultimately decides to do.
