Why David Jones’ Departure Could be a Good Thing For Memphis

Published

on

Last week, it became official that Memphis F David Jones will forgo his final year of eligibility and turn pro. This came after a long offseason of speculation, and even coach Penny Hardaway publicly stating he likes his chances of convincing David to return. David was a very good player for Memphis last season. Averaging 21.8 PPG and 7.6 RPG, Jones was a unanimous first team all-conference selection. But even with his individual success Memphis was still unable to secure an NCAA tournament bid.

Here’s a few reasons why I believe Memphis will be just fine without Jones, and maybe even better off.

Additions of PJ Haggerty and Tyrese Hunter

Memphis is set to have one of the most electric backcourts in the country next year with incoming transfers, Texas guard Tyrese Hunter and Tulsa guard PJ Haggerty. Haggerty averaged 21/5/3 on 49.5% shooting as a FRESHMAN in the AAC. Hunter brings more experience as a junior he averaged 11/2/4 on 45.1% shooting. Having a guy like David who demands high usage rate could leave a lot on the table for those guys.

Although David Jones is a good scorer, he’s not a winner

David Jones undeniably possesses a lot of individual talent on the basketball court. However, when it comes to measuring success in terms of team success, Jones falls short. Despite his impressive individual statistics, his collegiate career record of 60-55 reflects a lack of substantial victories at the highest level of competition. Furthermore, the absence of any appearances in the NCAA tournament underscores the notion that Jones has yet to translate his individual prowess into being a winning player. While his talent is undeniable, Jones still has much to prove in terms of his ability to lead his team to victory on the grandest stage.

Clean Slate

Last season was an absolute disaster by all accounts. One of the most embarrassing displays of effort by a Memphis Tiger Basketball team in a long time. Memphis now only has one scholarship player returning from last year.

Adding a better fit

This is where Memphis could really end up being better off than before. If Memphis can go get a player like Arthur Kaluma or Jamir Watkins to replace Jones; they’d be much better off. Just from fit perspective a player like Kaluma fits much more of the style Penny wants to play. Kaluma is a 6’7 defensive minded wing that is an above average slasher and a threat from behind the arc. While Jones is just 6’3, and a very lack luster defender at times.
