On Monday night, The Portal Report on Twitter reported that Memphis Basketball had reached out to Seton Hall transfer CG Femi Odukale. Odukale also received interest from New Mexico State, UCF, San Francisco and Marshall. Last season, Odukale averaged 7.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. His best season came in 2021-2022 when he averaged 10.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists for the University of Pittsburgh. Odukale is a two-time transfer, so he would need a waiver to become eligible immediately.

Journey of Odukale

Femi Odukale originally committed to the University of Pittsburgh out of high school over offers from Seton Hall, Virginia Tech, Washington State and others. A three-star recruit out of high school, Odukale committed to the University of Pittsburgh over offers from several other high-major D1 schools. He came off the bench during his freshman season, averaging a respectable 6.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He started for Pitt during his sophomore campaign and put up great numbers, averaging 10.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

After two season at the University of Pittsburgh, Odukale transferred to Seton Hall, where he played 27.7 minutes a game and averaged 7.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists. In Seton Hall’s game against Memphis, Odukale had 3 points, 5 assists and 2 rebounds.

What Type of Player is Odukale?

Odukale is a combo guard, as he played the point guard and the shooting guard positions at Seton Hall last season. About 24.2% of the plays that he was involved in were off of the pick and roll as the primary ball handler. His next highest play frequency was in transition, which would fit what Memphis HC Penny Hardaway typically emphasizes with his teams. Lastly, 17.2% of his plays were off of spot-up jump shots, where he shot 25.9% from 3PT range. Odukale is a big guard that loves to attack the offensive glass, grabbing 12 offensive rebounds and scoring 15 points off of putbacks.

Memphis reportedly showed interest in Vanderbilt G Tyrin Lawrence and South Dakota G Kruz Perrot-Hunt. This signifies that HC Penny Hardaway is focused on adding another veteran guard that can shoot it. Look for Hardaway and staff to continue to prioritize adding another guard and a big in the transfer portal.
