Memphis Guard Jayhlon Young Arrives on Campus

on

Memphis point guard Jayhlon Young will expectedly arrive on campus tonight, sources confirm to Tiger Blueprint.

Young will be the fourth Tiger to join the team in the past week. Point guard Jahvon Quinerly got in last Monday night. Wing Jaykwon Walton committed to Memphis and subsequently made it to campus last Thursday morning. Center Jordan Brown began practicing with the team on Saturday.

Young, a transfer from UCF, has been committed to Memphis since May 4. Despite his early commitment, though, he is still arriving on campus late because of an academic situation.

Fortunately, he’s making it just in time to join Memphis on its trip to the Dominican Republic, which goes from tomorrow (Aug. 1) to Aug. 7. Quinerly, Walton and Brown will also be on the trip.

Memphis’ Trip to the Dominican Republic

The Tigers will play three exhibition games during their seven days in the Dominican Republic. The first game will be on Wednesday against former Tiger Lester Quinones and the Dominican Republic National Team. The second and third games will be on Friday and Sunday against a Dominican Select team.

There will be no livestreams, radio broadcasts or live stats for any of these games. Fans, however, can still keep up with the action through Memphis basketball’s official Twitter/X account.

Who Hasn’t Arrived to Campus?

Young’s arrival means that just two Memphis signees have yet to make it to campus. Those are St. John’s transfer David Jones and 4-star recruit Mikey Williams.

Jones, a native of the Dominican Republic, is currently sorting through an academic situation. He’ll make it to campus as soon as his credits are finalized.

Mikey Williams, on the other hand, may never join the team. He’s still dealing with six gun-related felony charges that stem from an incident at his (San Diego, Calif.) home in March. The 6-foot-3 guard allegedly shot at a moving car filled with five people—including three minors—as it was driving away from the house.

Mikey Williams is currently in the city of Memphis, though. He posed for an Instagram photo with a youth women’s basketball team on Saturday in front of the Memphis Sports and Events Center. The team’s account posted the photo later in the day.

All-AAC forward DeAndre Williams’ future is also up in the air. The 26-year-old senior, who turns 27 in October, is currently awaiting the NCAA’s decision on his waiver for an additional year of eligibility. His attorney, Don Jackson, reportedly submitted all required documents for the waiver to Memphis’ compliance department two weeks ago.

There is growing optimism within Memphis’ program that the NCAA will declare DeAndre Williams eligible, per sources.

Memphis head coach Penny Hardaway confirmed as such during a session with the media on Thursday.

“I’m definitely optimistic about it happening because of the case [DeAndre Williams] has and looking at other similar cases around the country that have been given a waiver,” Hardaway said. “So, I’m just hoping that [trend] stays true.”
