Memphis women’s basketball has been on the rise lately. Former head coach Katrina Merriweather returned to her alma mater during the offseason, and Alex Simmons took the coaching reigns. A former Tennessee player under Pat Summitt, Simmons coached at Middle Tennessee, Ole Miss, and most recently, Gardner-Webb. What’s in store for Simmons in her first Tigers season? And what is the program’s future under her?

2023-24 Roster

Under Simmons’ leadership, Memphis women’s basketball has experienced a surge in both recruiting and talent retention. One notable success story is Madison Griggs, who has consistently delivered on the court and is set to return for her fifth season. Furthermore, Simmons has effectively tapped into her connections at Gardner-Webb for three portal transfers. She also secured a touted transfer from Rutgers, Kai Carter, and signed five freshmen.

Expect a competitive team next season. While building a program takes time, Simmons’ coaching and the program’s momentum should allow Memphis to progress smoothly. They’ll likely be a top AAC team, contending for NCAA and NIT slots.

Freshman

Ally Hollifield, 5-7 PG, Shelby HS (Shelby, NC)

Jana Sallman, 6-3 F/C, Western Reserve Academy (Hudson, OH)

Raven Sims, 5-9 PG, Tipton-Rosemark Academy (Millington, TN)

Nikole Thomas, 5-10 CG, Kamiakin HS (Kennewick, WA)

Latazia Williamson, 6-1 Foward, Hillsboro HS (Nashville, TN)

Transfers

Kai Carter, 6-0 Fifth Yr. Senior Guard, Rutgers

Ki’Ari Cain, 5-6 Fifth Yr. Senior PG, Garner Webb

Alasia Smith, 5-10 Senior Forward, Garner Webb

Layken Cox, 6-1 Junior Forward, Garner Webb

Schedule

In addition, the Tigers have an exciting non-conference schedule lined up for this season. This includes a trip to Knoxville to play the Volunteers, along with playing in the Battle 4 Atlantis. Memphis will end non-conference play with a home matchup with cross state rival, Mississippi State.

Future

Simmons, with her extensive basketball background, appears to be an ideal fit for the head coach position. Her prior experiences in and around Memphis have given her an in-depth understanding of the area. Given these factors, I anticipate Memphis to be in the NCAA Tournament before her tenure is up.
