Report: Memphis and Top Transfer Guard Have “Mutual Interest”

Published

on

Last week, on March 29th, The Athletic reported that Tulsa G PJ Haggerty decided to enter the transfer portal. Per Hitmen Hoops, Memphis and Tulsa transfer G PJ Haggerty have a “mutual interest” in each other. Hitmen Hoops expects Texas and other high major schools to pursue one of the best guards available.

Haggerty Named #1 Transfer

According to ON3 Sports, Haggerty is ranked as the #1 transfer currently in the transfer portal. Haggerty averaged 21.2 points per game, 5.5 rebounds per game and 3.8 assists per game. He shot 49.3% from the field, 28.6% from the three-point line and 76.7% from the free-throw line. He is gaining confidence in his outside shot, but he is elite off of ball screens and getting to the basket where he finishes 62.6% of his shots at the rim.

Tulsa Fans in Shock

After Haggerty set a new career high in points in their upset against South Florida, he signed a fan’s shirt that read “I’m staying in Tulsa.” However, three weeks later, Haggerty entered his name in the portal. Tulsa fans were in shock, but can we really blame Haggerty? He’s going to get a chance to earn significantly more money and play on an elevated stage. Haggerty made the best decision for himself, and he’s setting himself up for success wherever he lands.

Massive Addition

Memphis lost PG Jayhlon Young to the transfer portal over a week ago, and PG Joe Cooper still has not decided on what he wants to do. The Tigers also lost PG Jahvon Quinerly, as he’s out of eligibility. Thus, there are a ton of open minutes at the guard position. Combine that with the fact that Memphis has one of the best point guards to ever play the game as its head coach, and Memphis fans have a lot to look forward to.
