Teafale Lenard Jr.: Uncertainty Surrounding His Enrollment at Memphis

Published

on

Memphis basketball under Penny Hardaway has been no stranger to abrupt roster changes. The most recent reports suggest that Teafale Lenard Jr.’s chances of playing for the University of Memphis are slim.

Lenard, a transfer from Middle Tennessee State, is known for his immense defensive upside. In April, he chose the Tigers over Texas A&M and the NBL.

Presently, sources close to the situation reveal that academics are the top determining factor in his situation. Potentially losing Lenard could significantly impact next year’s roster.

The question now is how will Penny navigate this situation and the rest of the roster going forward?

Roster Implications

With the recent additions of Jahvon Quinerly and Jordan Brown, all attention is on DeAndre Williams. Now Lenard, who could start if Williams wasn’t grant his waiver, may not be in the mix.

If the reports prove true, Memphis could lose a significant piece, possibly their best defender.

While his offensive game continues to develop, Lenard demonstrates an ability to finish effectively around the rim.

His possible absence leaves Nick Jourdain as the only 4 on the roster, resulting in razor-thin depth at that position if Williams can’t get cleared.

Next Move

Hardaway is in a bind with question marks surrounding Lenard, DeAndre Williams, and Mikey Williams. In essence, as August approaches, Memphis finds itself uncertain about who will suit up on the court.

As of the current date, despite their individual situations, you can’t rule any of them out. Lenard in particular might still have a chance to arrange something before the start of the school year, although the likelihood of that happening remains unclear.

Hardaway and his staff could attempt to get a last minute transfer in replacement of Lenard.

The transfer portal will likely populate once again in the coming weeks as more players complete their summer classes and become graduate transfers.
